Atlanta Hi-Tec 2001

For this year's Atlanta Race, team "High Octane" consisted of Ben, Hans, and Sean, while team "Who's Idea was this Anyhow?" consisted of Allison, Karen, and Kelly. Cole was nice enough to let Jon, Karen, Kelly, and me stay with him, while Ben, Allison, and Hans stayed at a hotel near the race because Allison had family in town. Cole was not able to race this year because he had just recently had knee surgery.

The race started out with a 2 mile kayak. There were no bouys to follow, though. Instead, each team had to navigate various orienteering courses. So the lake was filled with boats going in many different directions!

After that, we had a short 6 mile mountain bike, then a 5.5 mile run around the lake, followed by the same 6 mile mountain bike course.

Almost all of the pictures here are from the "special tests," because those were all near the transition area where the spectators/photographers could hang out.

Here are the guys trying to make it up this slick wall coated with Crisco.

Ben at the top. We had to do this after the run leg, before the final bike leg, which meant we had to go back out covered in Crisco!

Here are the girls pushing Kelly up to the top!

All three girls at the top of the Crisco wall, just about to jump down.

Here's Kelly jumping the electric fence. It was about 4.5 feet tall and you had to get all 3 teammates over without touching it!

Here's Karen jumping over the fence!

Here is Kelly being lifted up to get caribiner off a tall rope. Another special test.

And the 2nd part of the test: Allison having to put the caribiner back on the rope.

Here I am going over the 12 foot wall!

High Octane rests in the water after the race (and washes off the Crisco!). We finished in 7th place out of 98 male teams, and 19th out of 300+ teams overall, so we were quite happy.

And here the girls come in. Take 10 minutes off the time on the finish clock there -- all female teams start in the last stage.
